Walrus Audio Kangra Filter Fuzz Pedal Overview
The Walrus Audio Kangra Filter Fuzz Pedal is a true bypass 2-in-1 pedal that delivers a thick octave fuzz, and a psychedelic filter that can run on its own or with the fuzz effect. It’s great for sweeps, frequency boost or envelope filter sounds. The Kangra is great for playing aggressive leads that cut through the mix.
SNL guitarist and fuzz fanatic, Jared Scharff, collaborated with Walrus Audio to create a modern filtered and fuzz pedal inspired by the Kay Fuzz-Tone, his favourite vintage fuzz pedal. Then the Kangra Filter Fuzz pedal was born - delivering a ton of grit, a vintage tone and modern features.
The Fuzz footswitch lets you choose from two different fuzz effects using the M-V (M for Modern, V for Vintage) toggle switch. Switching to M delivers a fuzz with longer and tighter sustain, and the V position delivers a chunky breakup with shorter sustain.
The Filter footswitch works with the res (resonance), sens (sensitivity), and freq (frequency) control knobs, as well as the env (envelope filter) toggle switch. You can use the filter on its own to add a unique shape to your tone or use the Envelope filter switch to get sixties style tones.
The res (resonance) control lets you adjust the resonance of the 2-pole low-pass filter circuit. The lower settings deliver a smooth, chiming tone, while the higher settings deliver a more pointed, aggressive filter sweep.
The sens (sensitivity) control adjusts the envelope applied to the filter cut off. At a lower setting, it has minimal cutoff frequency movement, and the higher setting opens up the filter wide when you play hard.
The env toggle switch engages the envelope applied to the filter cutoff frequency when switched to the right and disengages it when it’s switched to the left. The envelope is driven by how aggressively you play.
The freq (frequency) control knob sets the filter cutoff frequency of the filter circuit. You can use it to shape the fuzz signal or signals from other pedals to get unique filtered tones. When you use the freq with the res (resonance) control knob, you can produce many unique filtered tones.
The mid toggle switch changes the midrange contour of the fuzz circuit from heavily scooped when switched to the left, to a flatter mid response when switched to the right.
You can plug an expression pedal into the expression jack to override the filter cutoff frequency pot, and control it via your foot.
The art on the casing was inspired by a trip that Jared Scharff took to the Kangra Valley near the Himalayas, which inspired new ideas to create the Kangra Filter Fuzz. The pedal comes in a Prismatic Powder “Peach Ice Cream” case with art by Adam Forster in white and blue ink.
The Walrus Audio Kangra Filter Fuzz Pedal uses a 9v power supply (not included).
