JHS Pedals PG-14 Paul Gilbert Overdrive Distortion Pedal Overview

The PG-14 was developed in collaboration with Paul Gilbert, operating as an extra overdrive/distortion channel for your amplifier, with a circuit having a FET-based distortion engine that has the qualities of a pushed tube amplifier.

The JHS PG-14 provides has control knobs, with four hot pink knobs for Volume, Mid, Tone, and Mid Frequency, and two black knobs on the right for Drive and Push. Volume, Drive, and Tone are straightforward, Volume controls the output level, Drive controls the amount of overdrive and delivers responsive dynamics, .and Tone controls the brightness and warmth.

The Mid and Mid Frequency controls work together, with the Mid Frequency control used to set the frequencies from 400Hz to 7.5kHz and will always deliver a steady response. The PG-14 also has an active mid-frequency preamp at the front of the FET distortion circuit which provides a wide range of tonal options.

Push controls the amount of gain that goes into the circuit’s FET amp, providing a wide range of overdrive and distortion tones and turns in the pedal into something similar to another high-gain amp placed in front of your amp. Push can also affect the overall tone - the more you turn it up, the bass will sound bigger and looser.

The PG-14 was designed to be tweaked in order to get the best and most accurate tones, so it’s good for experimenting to find your ideal sound, delivering a more pronounced midrange, a wider bass response, a fiery crunch and a high-end that doesn’t sound too scratchy or shrill.

It’s ideal for guitarists who want the sound of a fully cranked-up amp, but with more control over the volume, so this would be great for bedroom players who want that valve amp tone without disturbing the neighbours. It’s also great for playing leads and solos as this pedal will push you through the mix, adding a dynamic, biting drive. It’s best to use this pedal when it’s dialled into a clean or just slightly overdriven tone, as this pedal does all the work.

To complete the PG-14, there are 1/4-inch input and output jacks, true-bypass, a blue LED, a 9v DC power jack (9v DC power supply not included, and there are no battery options), and a light blue casing with 4 hot pink control knobs and 2 black. This pedal will stand out amongst the rest on your pedalboard.
