Boss OD-1X Special Edition Premium Overdrive Pedal Overview

The Boss OD-1 was originally introduced in 1977 and was one of the first overdrive pedals to be made available in the emerging stomp-box market. Though fuzz was still a more commonly used effect in the 70's, the overdrive would go on to become the staple sound. The OD-1 sound was popularised by the L.A metal scene and over the years it has been re-designed several times by Boss. The OD-1 was designed with simplicity in mind and it's asymmetric waveform resulted in a unique, gritty overdrive.

The new Boss OD-1X takes this classic design and brings it into the realm of the modern guitar player. Built using MDP technology (Multi Dimensional Processing) which has real time DSP to perfectly capture your tone, no matter where on the fretboard. The result is a high definition, bold overdrive tone which captures the character of your guitar and pickups and adds natural compression and wide-range tonal shaping. The OD-1X offers the most superior playing experience for an overdrive pedal to date!

GAK's Boss OD-1X FAQ's

Q1: Is the OD-1X an analog overdrive?
A: No, The OD-1X uses digital processing or MDP technology to provide real-time DSP effects. The result of this means the OD-1X is more responsive and has a very low noise even when using the gain on full.

Q2: What is the diffence between the OD-1X and the SD-1X?
A: The SD-1X is an all-analog overdrive pedal built by the Waza Craft, Japan custom shop. It is more suited to those looking for a traditional, vintage overdrive tone. The OD-1X has a much more modern tone and digital circuit which allows for tones that are unattainable on an analog circuit.

Q3: How long is the battery life?
A: The OD-1X uses a 9V PP-3 type battery. Using an Alkaline battery (6LR61) will give around 9 hours of use. The OD-1X can also be powered by an optional AC adapter such as the Boss PSA.

Lovely, chunky build quality. Not geeky enough to start weighing pedals, but this is a proper lump of metal. Excellent OD pedal. Can only comment on use with my rig, which is a jazzmaster with an ancient HH 100w transistor combo, set to half power, with a clean, dark and woody tone. If you are careful with the EQ and the gain it can offer a fairly transparent boost. If you dial in extra EQ you can tweak tone very effectively and just leave it on as a clean boost / tone tweaker. If you want the OD, then just dial in the gain - instant sparkly Tom Petty sounds jump out at you, give it a bit more and you are in Malcolm Young territory. As this is not a pedal with a traditional OD circuit - but is a digital processor Boss have taken the option to give somewhat wider range to the EQ and gain controls than you might traditionally expect. So if the gain is whacked all the way up you have something that would pass for a distortion pedal, with a convincing 4 x12 big bottom end. Another bonus of it's digital architecture is it's very low noise floor. As I said, I am not running this into a valve amp, I have no idea how good this thing is at pushing the front end of a valve amp into break up. But as Boss have got everything else 100% spot on with this pedal, I would be inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt. Compared this alongside a J. Rockett Archer Icon and a quality tubescreamer clone and with a bit of tweaking it could match the best (to my ears) sounds of both - and a flexibility over and above the other two. IfI had room for 1 pedal in my gear bag, it would be this one.
