Shure MV7 MOTIV Dynamic Podcast Microphone, Black Overview

Shure come out guns-blazing with their revolutionary new dynamic microphone, the MV7. Its the latest addition to their successful MOTIV range and utilises a hybrid design. Inspired by its bigger brother and one of our best sellers, the SM7B, the MV7 is a fantastic alternative at a more affordable price point. Shure has become synonymous with excellent quality and their microphones have been used on countless recordings, so you can be sure that the MV7 will make your voice sound top-notch.

USB & XLR

The MV7 is arguably a more “serious” option than the rest of the MOTIV range as it features a traditional mic design and has both USB and XLR outputs, giving you the option to record your voice analogue or digitally. This is perfect for content creators, streamers and podcasters that are looking for a premium upgrade as it gives you the option to record without an interface.

Nothing Else Needed

The Shure MV7 has a similar form factor to the SM7B but also inherits the controllability and ease of use of the MOTIV range thanks to its powerful Direct USB recording feature. This means you can save money as it doesn’t require any expensive additional equipment (such as a pre-amp or interface) to get the most out of it, you can just plug it in and start recording!

Voice Isolation Technology

New and innovative features include Voice Isolation Technology, which puts your voice exactly where it needs to be in your recordings by cancelling out any background noise. Auto Level Mode, which automatically adjusts gain and compression on the fly whilst connected via USB, is akin to having a virtual engineer and guarantees a balanced sound without all the extra hassle. Set it and forget it! However, if you opt for Manual Mode, you have the option for deeper editing and fine tweaking of additional controls such as Mic Gain, EQ, Monitor Mix, Limiter and Compression via the ShurePlus MOTIV app.

Easy Tweaks

If you’d still like to adjust your sound without getting technical, you can access two useful preset-based options within the app. You can choose between three tone settings, “Dark”, “Natural” or “Bright” as well as select between two Mic Position presets, “Near” and “Far” depending on how close you like to be to the microphone when you record.

You’re given immediate, hands-on control via the built-in touch panel, which gives you instant access to useful parameters such as microphone gain, headphone volume, monitor mix, locking the touch panel and even lets you switch between Auto Level Mode and Manual Mode.

Direct Monitoring

The Shure MV7 also has a very handy built-in monitoring output (3.5mm), which allows you to experience pristine audio via your favourite headphones or earphones.

The MV7 is a premium, professional microphone at an affordable price and is a brilliant option for vocalists, streamers and podcasters alike.

The NEW Shure MV7 Dynamic Microphone - Inspired by an icon - Made for the sounds of tomorrow - Podcasters. Vocalists. Streamers.

Shure microphones can be found on countless recordings, in studios, on stages and in bedrooms around the world.... and with good reason. They're well-priced and, most importantly, sound fantastic. From the ubiquitous SM57 to the flagship SM7B you're guaranteed to find a microphone that will fit your needs and excel at everything you throw at it.

Shure has built a name that’s associated with quality and they’ve become one of the industry standards when it comes to microphones. The MV7 has a lot to live up to but does so in spades, offering incredible new features, a choice of two colours (Black/Silver) and an attractive price to boot.

How does it compare to the rest of the MOTIV range?

The MV7 is the first microphone in the range to feature an analogue XLR output and isn’t as focused on portable, mobile phone-based recording as the rest of the range. Its shape is also the most closely aligned with a standard microphone. This new offering arguably bridges the gap between the MOTIV range and the SM7B. It also comes in two colours, Black and Silver, so you can choose which one fits your style and setup.

Who is the MV7 for?

The MV7 is the first microphone in the range to feature an analogue XLR output and isn’t as focused on portable, mobile phone-based recording as the rest of the range. Its shape is also the most closely aligned with a standard microphone. This new offering arguably bridges the gap between the MOTIV range and the SM7B. It also comes in two colours, Black and Silver, so you can choose which one fits your style and setup.

What’s new about the MV7?

Although all of the products in the MOTIV range are fantastic recording solutions, the MV7 is the first microphone in the range to have a “typical” shape. It also boasts some innovative new features including Voice Isolation Technology (which prevents background noise), Auto Level Mode (which adjusts gain and compression settings on-the-fly!) and deeper parameter customisation via Manual Mode from the ShurePlus MOTIV app. You also have the ability to alter the monitor mix from the desktop app.

A fantastic feature, that is a particular bonus for podcasters and streamers, is the ability to adjust settings such as the mic gain via the built-in touch screen and the option to optimise the mic for close (“Near” setting) or further away (“Far” setting) recording depending on your preference.

What are the differences between the MV7 and the SM7B?

For those with less recording experience, are after something hassle-free or just want to save money by not having to buy extra gear, we couldn’t recommend the MV7 more as it’s an all-rounder that doesn’t require a pre-amp to boost the signal and can be used to record digitally via USB. The cost of a decent preamp, interface and the SM7B is more than twice the cost of the MV7.

To achieve the classic SM7B sound you need to use a close mic position, the MV7 on the other hand, allows you to increase the mic distance if you so choose.

The MV7 has a similar form factor to the SM7B but in a smaller package. The MV7 isn’t designed to replace or compete with the SM7B, it’s a more affordable and simpler option. The SM7B may be considered a more professional choice, has arguably greater recording fidelity and an audiophile-quality sound that befits the flagship price. The MV7 is sort of the SM7B’s “little brother”, offers premium, studio-quality sound and is a lot more user friendly with its direct USB recording and interface.
