Hofner HCT-SH Shorty Electric Travel, Black Overview

The Hofner Shorty was first produced back in the 1980s, and this contemporary version continues that line, bringing it up to date in the 21st centuary. The Hofner Shorty offers full scale length combined with small overall dimensions. You can take it anywhere - it is the perfect practise companion, or a worthy partner while on the road.

Founded in 1864, Hofner's comprehensive range of guitars draws on the firms long-standing success making precision string instruments for musicians. The Beatles' Sir Paul McCartney played a Hofner Violin Bass, and the company's superb attention to detail and stylish design has continued to inspire both rock and jazz musicians to this day. Despite the numerous changes over 125 years the company is still strongly a family firm with strong values for customers, and for high quality, musical instruments.

Full scale length - standard fret spacing and string length

I bought this to use while away in my caravan and it works well for that purpose playing through an effects unit and a headphone amp. It is very playable straight from the box although I think that a few adjustments could make it feel closer to my other guitars. Neck is heavy and would need some counterbalance weight to make it comfortable to play standing up.This really isn't a guitar for gigging with but it is good value for money if you need a portable guitar for use when travelling.

Although the quality of this guitar is good for the money, the way it is set up straight out of the box is so poor that it is impossible to change a string if you break one. The bridge is too close to the pickup. After slackening the strings at the machine heads, I was able to reposition the bridge, but then had to reset the intonation of each string so that the guitar played in tune. It took quite a time, and no little knowledge. A beginner could not do it ... Additionally, one pickup mounting screw was missing, and the remaining three were loose in their holes. I had to plug the holes with cocktail sticks. then fit new screws. No one had inspected this guitar, either at GAK or the distributor? Shame...

Takes some practice to play as the body is unbalanced and has a specific sound that isn’t suited for all production. Overall, an excellent one trick pony.

Great travel size. Plays OK after setting up.

Nice little instrument - ideal size for travelling. Neck feels really good, although the weighting's a little funny if you put it on a strap. I'm not looking forward to restringing it, though, as it looks like you have to take the bridge off.
