Shure SM7B Dynamic Vocal & Instrument Microphone Overview

The Shure SM7B is a bona fide legend amongst microphones, with a flat, wide-range frequency response that makes it perfect for live sound, recording and broadcasting. This versatile dynamic microphone is a chameleon that captures the natural sonic beauty of vocals and a wide variety of instruments. The fact that so many artists and leading podcasters swear by this mic speaks volumes. If you only have room for one mic in your arsenal, the SM7B is an excellent choice.

Pristine Audio

Shure have bestowed the SM7 B with their trademark robust build-quality, this is a premium microphone that’ll serve you well for many years to come. The SM7 B is equipped with an internal shockmounting and suspension system, virtually eliminating mechanical noise and resulting in a pristine sound. There’s no need to worry about irritating hum or interference from your equipment, as the SM7 B’s state-of-the-art electromagnetic shielding keeps it at bay.

More Than The Mic

Part of what makes the SM7-B such a popular choice for close-up vocal recording (whether that’s singing, voice-over or podcasting) is the professional-quality pop filter. The SM7-B’s effective pop filter saves you having to buy or setup extra protection against explosive breath sounds. A more recent addition to the SM7-B’s feature-set is the A7WS detachable windscreen, which has been specially designed to deliver a warm close-talk vocal sound and reduce plosives.

A handy quality-of-life feature is the integrated swivel mount and captive stand nut. The SM7B’s yoke mount makes mounting/dismounting and adjusting the mic position a breeze.

Sounds Great - Wherever You Use It

A huge advantage of the Shure SM7B is that it delivers plenty of warm sonic detail and is resistant to bleed from other sources. This is due to the SM7B’s classic cardioid polar pattern, which has been designed for optimal off-axis rejection. This allows you to talk or sing into the SM7B at a comfy angle whilst capturing your voice with minimal colouration.

If you’re recording in an untreated room, performing with a loud live band or a singing drummer, this feature of the SM7B makes it a top choice.

Tailor To Your Voice

Another key feature of the Shure SM7B is its sonic versatility. At its default setting the SM7B provides a flat, wide range response. Using the dual tone controls, you can access the SM7B’s switchable dual-band passive EQ. This built-in equalisation section lets you tailor the SM7B to your voice type.

In Flat or low-cut mode (which rolls off bass frequencies), this dynamic mic excels with male voice-over and vocals. The presence boost adds more definition to sibilant-heavy voices and brighter sound sources.

Included with the SM7B is a removable switch plate (RPM602), which can prevent you from accidentally adjusting the EQ sliders during a performance.

Ready For Volume

The Shure SM7B can withstand punishing amounts of SPL (sound pressure level) - up to 180dB. When recording fat kicks and maxed out guitar & bass cabinets, the SM7B can deliver the goods.

A True Icon

Not many microphones can boast the prestige that the SM7B has. The SM7B has been the mic of choice on legendary recordings such as Michael Jackson’s Thriller and continues to be used by leading contemporary artists such as Dave Grohl, Mike Kerr (Royal Blood), Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), John Mayer, Flume, Finneas (Billie Eilish) and Joe Duplantier (Gojira).

Dialogue Powerhouse

Recently, Shure’s SM7B has started to gain an impressive reputation outside of its musical applications. More often than not, in front of a broadcaster, VO artist, radio presenter or podcasters you’ll spot an SM7B. When it comes to dialogue, the SM7B is an excellent mic.

The dynamic SM7B sounds fantastic with a wide range of voices and is easy to achieve professional quality results with. Using the onboard EQ switches, you can instantly dial in the optimal sound for your voice, whether you’re speaking, singing, screaming, growling etc.

It’s no exaggeration to say that the Shure SM7B is one of the best dynamic microphones for the money. It’s a true legend in terms of records that it’s featured on and continues to be what many call an Industry Standard to this day.

Podcasters love it. Bedroom producers love it. Famous engineers love it. We’re sure you’ll love the SM7B, too.

It works fine but since GAK simply stuck it in the post that’s probably why. Awful company, do not recommend them at all. Go elsewhere.
