Moog Model 10 Modular Synthesizer Overview

This synthesizer is nothing short of a musical and engineering masterpiece. Meticulously hand-built at the Moog factory in Asheville, NC, the Model 10 is a faithfully recreated version of the first compact modular synth that Dr. Robert Moog designed in 1971. If you have the chance to get in front of this glorious instrument, witness its timeless interface and experience its incredible sound, we guarantee you’ll be blown away. Not only does this Model 10 have the unmistakable sonic depth that only a genuine Moog modular can produce, it also benefits from modern build-quality and reliability.

A Synth Icon

The Moog Model 10 features an array of 11 discrete analogue modules, including a trio of prized 900-Series VCOs & the hallowed 907 Fixed Filter Bank, which are securely housed within a robust Tolex-enclosed wood cabinet. Whilst the Model 10 is an undoubtedly impressive instrument in looks and & sound, it was originally designed with portability in mind, making it far more transportable than other Moog modulars. Used by legendary synthesists such as Wendy Carlos (Switched-On Bach) and Isao Tomita (Snowflakes Are Dancing), the Moog Model 10 has a firm place in synthesiser history.

Vintage-Correct Build

You could easily mistake this Model 10 for one that was built half a decade ago, as it was hand-made to the exact factory specifications of the original. Undergoing the same traditional wiring process as the 1971 model, each module in the Model 10 reissue boasts hand-soldered and hand-stuffed components to the circuit board. Before finishing them with a sleek aluminium panel and mounting them inside the case, every Model 10 module is carefully tested by Moog’s skilled engineers.

Expansive Tonal Depth

The Model 10 features a total of 11 hand-wired modules, which includes three 901-Series VCOs (voltage-controlled oscillators), a 902 VCA (voltage-controlled amplifier), dual 911 Envelope Generators, a 903A random signal generator and the iconic 904A low-pass Ladder VCF (voltage-controlled filter).

Incredible Analogue Sound

When it comes to sound, the Model 10 is a truly special synthesizer, boasting unbelievable timbral depth and vast sonic potential. As the Model 10 was designed to focus on delivering astonishing sound and ease of use, its far more accessible than its modular siblings, making effortless forays into sonic exploration a breeze. Whether you’re a composer, producer or electronic experimentalist, the Model 10 will constantly surprise and inspire you for years to come.

Rare Oscillator Module

An advantage of the Moog Model 10 reissue is that it is equipped with the hallowed 901 oscillator, which is widely considered to be among the best-sounding in synth history. The 901 is an earlier design that was far more prone to tuning instability and imperfections in its waveform - resulting in an oscillator with a girthy, mountainous sound. This endearing quality was lost in its successor, the 921, which exchanged the drift that gave the 901 its warm & organic character for tuning accuracy. Even the larger and more elaborate Moog modular reissues such as the System 55, System 35 and Model 15 aren’t blessed with the sought-after 901 oscillator module, giving the Model 10 a distinct sonic identity.

The Moog Model 10 reissue is more than a fantastic synthesizer, it’s also a vital piece of electronic music history. The cost of functioning Moog modulars has reached astronomical levels and are exceedingly rare, making the Model 10 reissue a more attractive piece if you’re in the market for one. Due to the time-consuming construction process and increasing scarcity of components, the Moog Model 10 is only available in minimal numbers for a limited time. If you want one, be sure to secure it before Moog stops making them!
