Japanese company Ibanez are one of the best-loved names in the guitar community, having developed a fierce reputation for high-quality instruments that combine innovative features with an inspiring tone. Whilst Ibanez’s impressive guitar roster covers a wide variety of genres, Ibanez is renowned by players of technically demanding styles. There’s a reason why Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Lari Basilio, Paul Gilbert and so many other virtuosos favour Ibanez.
Headless Wonders
Once again, Ibanez is reaffirming their stance as one of the leading manufacturers with its Q (short for “Quest”) series of high-performance headless guitars. Headless guitars have seen a resurgence amongst modern guitarists due to their lightweight, balance and ergonomic shape. Instead of transforming an existing model into a headless design, Ibanez has crafted the entire Q series that has been created from the ground up. Every element within an Ibanez Q series guitar has been specifically chosen to deliver an effortless playing experience and an elegant sound.
Slanted Frets
Ibanez has kitted out all Q series models with high-quality Jescar EVO Gold frets, which are praised for their durability, smooth string-bending action and striking appearance. However, some Q series guitars have an “X” in their name, which means they're part of the QX sub-series.
Many modern players wear their guitars up high to facilitate the intricate techniques. This is why the QX guitars feature slanted frets, where each fret is positioned at an 8-degree angle. This provides a more natural and comfortable fretting hand feel, as the fingers tend to slightly angle inwards when playing the guitar that’s worn high.
Ergonomic Body Shape
Each Q model guitar features a lightweight and resonant Nyatoh body, which has contoured with strategically placed curves for optimal playing comfort. The result is a body design that looks sophisticated and feels great to use for extended playing sessions. Nyatoh is tonally akin to Mahogany, with the warm highs, punchy mids and powerful lows that you’d expect.
New Pickups
Ibanez has designed a new set of pickups that have been specially matched to a headless design. The Q52 models feature an H-H configuration with dual Q58 humbuckers, which provide a crisp, defined tone that’s tonally even across the entire frequency spectrum. The Q54 models are equipped with an S-S-H setup, which includes a Q58 humbucker in the bridge and two R1 single-coils. Like the Q58, the R1 pickup boasts a crystal clear sound and low-noise performance.
Whether you’re playing swift lead lines or complex chords, these pickups will ensure that each note is beautifully defined.
dyna-MIX Switching
With the dyna-MIX switching system onboard, you have twice the number of tones at your fingertips. With one flick of the Alter Switch, you have access to an alternate set of tones which widely expands the sonic palette of each Q series guitar. Depending on the pickup configuration, you can emulate a humbucking sound by combining two single coils, switch the pickup from series to parallel wiring and split a humbucker into a single coil.
Gorgeous Maple Neck
The Ibanez Q series features luxurious 3-piece Roasted Birdseye Maple & Bubinga necks, which look as good as they feel to play. The models that have straight frets feature a nicely balanced Wizard C profile and the slanted fret models use Ibanez’s Parallel Wizard profile, which has been tailored to higher playing positions.
Innovative Hardware
Part of what sets the Ibanez Q headless guitars apart from the rest is its rock-solid hardware, which makes it incredibly straightforward to set up compared to other models. Each model utilises a custom string lock, which has a simple one-piece design. This makes the custom string lock more durable, easier to maintain and best of all, allows you to continue using your string brand and gauge of choice. No proprietary strings are required with the Ibanez Q series.
Whether you’re a headless guitar veteran or are looking to explore the many benefits of a headless model, the Ibanez Q series is an excellent choice. Shop the Ibanez Q series guitars below and reinvigorate your approach to playing.
