Fender Artist Series J Mascis Telecaster, Bottle Rocket Blue Flake Overview
Fender have teamed up with iconic alternative rock musician J Mascis to recreate his favourite guitar - an original 1958 top-loader Telecaster. Whilst this Artist series instrument can pull off traditional Tele tones with ease, it can also handle all the fuzz you can throw at it when it’s time to emulate those huge riffs and leads that J Mascis & Dinosaur Jr. are famous for.
Old-School Heart
Just like with the immensely popular Squier Jazzmaster that bears his name, this Fender Artist series Telecaster is a fitting tribute to the immense influence that J Mascis and Dinsour Jr. have had on rock music. For this particular model, J Mascis wanted to recreate his favourite guitar, a 1958 top-loader Tele, which he’s used on most of his lead work throughout his recording career. It’s fair to say that Fender have managed to nail the distinctive look and tone of this truly special instrument.
Potent Tele Tone
At the core of the J Mascis Tele’s natural voice is the solid Alder body, which delivers the timeless Fender tone that you’ve come to know and love - detailed highs, vibrant mids and tight lows. What makes the body stand out is the captivating Bottle Rocket Blue Flake finish and mirrored chrome pickguard, which faithfully recreates the original’s unique aesthetic.
Fender and J Mascis have equipped this signature Telecaster with a pair of Custom ’58 Tele® Single-Coil pickups, which have been voiced to J Mascis’ exacting specs. These pickups boast a bright tone with plenty of bite, making them ideal companions to driven amps & fuzz pedals as they retain plenty of note clarity & definition.
Superb Playability
Enhancing the characteristic Tele twang is the bolt-on Maple neck, which makes a classic pairing with Alder body and feels very comfortable to play thanks to its “C” profile. The back of the neck features a Road Worn Nitrocellulose Lacquer coating, providing a satin-smooth finish that feels great to play.
True Workhorse
Rounding off the recreation of J’s prized Tele is the 3-Saddle Vintage-Style Topload Tele bridge with Barrel Brass saddles, which is a key part of the guitar’s unique sound. Because this is a Fender instrument, you can count on it to provide solid tuning stability and spot-on intonation.
Whether you’re looking for the perfect weapon to unleash your sonic assault onto the masses or simply want a top-notch Fender Tele, this J Mascis Artist model is one you need to play.
