Catalinbread Echorec Echo Delay Pedal Overview
The Catalinbread Echorec is an authentic recreation of the legendary Binson drum echo in a compact stompbox size. Catalinbread have used their design wizardry to condense the Echorec whilst retaining the unique musical qualities and distinct sonic character of this iconic effect. Prepare to experience deep rolling waves and labyrinths of coral caves with this stunning pedal.
Pompeii And Beyond
The Binson Echorec is a vintage drum echo unit that was utilised to great effect by David Gilmour, particularly during Pink Floyd’s Live At Pompeii performance. It was also a key part of Hank Marvin’s signature jangle as well as the bombastic drum sound of Zeppelin’s “When The Levee Breaks”.
Iconic Effect
Catalinbread’s Echorec (which is part of their Delay & Reverb series) is a sonically identical recreation of this sought-after machine in a significantly smaller, more reliable and more affordable unit. Not only have Catalinbread recreated the sound of the Binson, they’ve also captured the quirks and characteristics that gave the original its magic tone.
Tonnes Of Sounds
Whilst the Catalinbread Echorec can easily replicate those classic multi-head Binson tones, there’s a vast array of tones in this pedal. There are multi-dimensional choruses, lush faux reverbs, ethereal ambient washes, 50’s style slapbacks, otherwordly effects and so much more!
Vintage Sound - Modern Features
Thanks to the vital addition of a Delay Time control, the Catalinbread Echorec can explore sonic territories the original could only dream of reaching. You can also manipulate the Delay Time knob in real-time to create swirling spaceship-like effects.
A huge advantage of the Echorec is its increased delay time. Whilst the original was limited to 300m/s, the Catalinbread Echorec has a max delay time of 1 second. Used in conjunction with the 12 delay line combinations (which reconfigures the Echorec’s multi-head design), a universe of inspiring rhythmic patterns opens up - from progressive gallops to complex slapbacks.
Flexible Tone Tilt
Another way that Catalinbread have enhanced the Echorec is with its powerful Tone control, which has been designed to be more musically useful than the one found on the Binson. Using this control, you can tailor the echoes to be deep & warm (when you want the echoes to sit behind your playing) or bright & thin (perfect for bringing out the attack of rhythmic repeats). For maximum fun, we recommend using it in conjunction with self-oscillation.
True Tweakability
There are some under-the-hood parameters that allow you to sculpt the Echorec’s sound even more, with trimmers for the Gain and Modulation amounts as well as a True Bypass/Buffered Bypass switch.
Powerful Preamp
A key part of the Binson’s incredible tone is the valve-based audio path, which makes everything plugged into it sound better. The Echorec’s discrete two-transistor preamp replicates this aspect of the original, which provides a wonderful dynamic & touch-sensitive response whilst preserving & enhancing your guitar’s signal. The result is one of the most expressive delay pedals we’ve ever had the pleasure of playing!
The preamp can be pushed to its extreme with the internal Gain pot cranked, resulting in a “secret” fuzz boost tone that sounds massive - especially when sent into an already overdriven rig.
Extra Headroom
The Catalinbread Echorec can run at either 18V for additional headroom and note separation or at 9V for a great all-round tone that works well for “ambient soup” textures.
If you’re a fan of the icons that used the original, love vintage delay units or simply want a fantastic delay to add to your setup - the Catalinbread Echorec should be at the top of your list.
